I just reread my psot and realised it is loaded with typos and incoherencies - just wanted to clarify that when I said 'we resent them for saying they have the Truth because we think we have the Truth' I was reflecting what you said nto waht we actually think - as I went on to say it is the claim to monopoly on the Truth and the damaging effect on the critical faculties (the abitlity to search for the truth and test claims of truthfulness) of JWs which I resent.

1009 - it is not that we hate JWs (many of us have lover ones who are JWs are who we view as victims though I can understand bitterness by ex-JWs once the realisation fot eh conditional nature of the love of their former broterhs and sisters and how disillusioning that could be for relatiosnhips going forward) it is the organisation and its methods that we hate. It seems you are still caught up in the WBTS thinking about the nature of truth - we resent them for saying they have the Truth because we think we have the Truth. What I resent is the way they prevent my loved one from being able to serach for the Truth - that is to be able to bojectively evaluate information and test its truthfulness, that is to have curisiosity and discover for oneself what we undersatnd to be true - rathe they start from the proposition that they have been told the Truth by the organization so they should close their minds to anything that is inconsisten with that truth. The WBTS either deliberately or inadvertently has committed a fraud against the membership robbing them of self-respect (and substituting the arrogance of a sense of superiority based on the belief that they have a monopoly on truth and causing them to judge their self-worth only by reference to the extent of their obedience to the organisation), time, a positive outlook on humanity, meaningful relationships based on unconditional love and aspirations to achieve one's human potential etc.
Oh how many ways can I count the reasons for hating that corrupt organisation. And why does the organisation do this? For the glory of the organisation itself by spreading its membership and its bizarre message. And how does it do it? By very effective methods of emotioanl and psychological manipulation honed over more than 100 years.
Am I bitter at the WBTS - you bet I am because my wife has more loyalty to that bunch of deceitful old men than she has for me and they ahve secured such loyalty by unfair means and it intrudes into all sorts of areas of our family life. I am learning to suck it up for my wife's sake and I am trying hard to do this but I will never be comfortable with her requirement that I remain silent and stop trying to tell her what to me is bleeding obvious because she is incapable of listening to and fairly assessing what I have to say because the old men have tricked her into believing that in tryin gto tell her something based on love and concern I am an instrument of Satan. Pretty crap by any standard I would say.
I hope I have answered your question.

Clearly there are gradations of shunning - I know that Filipino Witnesses don't fully shun family members BUT to some extent it is the shame of being a df'd person that causes the damage such that the df'd person shuns himself or herself. When I first met my sister-in-law I thought her withdrawn nd hesitatn nature very odd - it was almost impossible to draw her into a conversation but later when I found out what it meant to be df'd and I found out she had been but that she still believed I realised what was going on.

Hey jgnat - what does your hubby think about organised sport? My missus does everything she can to to discourage my boy playing team sports such as rugby and cricket and only encourages tennis and swimming - lucky hse is not aroudn on Sudnays when I take him to mini-rugby. I remember when I first took him to min-rugby though - he sat at the side and wouldn't join in. I don't what she had said to him beforehand but he was scared to mix with the other kids. Thankfully he has moved on since then as I have gotten better at reassuring him about WBTS scare-mongering and tougher about stopping her exposing him to WBTS propaganda.

Slidin Fast - I was in southern Yorkshire starting in Sheffield where my brother lives and then walking the Penine Way in the Peaks District (Marsden to Edale). You won't get any dispute about the fact that Aussie cricket is in the doldrums (we have been there before - after the Lillee/Thommo era Australia fell into a deep malaise coutesy of Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket but then Captain Grumpy Allen Border pulled us out of it with taciturn bloody-mindedness and there followed a golden era with Tubby Taylor and Steve Waugh as captains when we were almost unbeaten for 15+ years - it is a sign of that success that you Pommy b*stards take such glee in pointing out the present state of our misfortune and then you rub it in by mentioning the Lions and the Olympics - I get ithere in spades working in London. But sport is like the economy - it is cyclical so enjoy your pre-eminence while it lasts!

There must be an argument that the WBTS has coerced its members into engaging in a practice that breaches the human rights of the df'd person. In essence it amounts to a form of organization-endorsed bullying. Like a bunch of mean girls inflicting the silent treatment on an out of favour girl. Schools don't tolerate that behaviour any more so why does society?
Similarly I would argue that the WBTS by coercing its members to indoctrinate their children into a set of beliefs that deny them the opportunity to realize their full poential also amounts to a breach of human rights principles.
Whether it could be argued in either case that it contravened law in any country would depend on how the Universal Declaration has been enshrined in local legislation.

I agree that shunning should be banned - it directly causes psychological stress or worse. My wife was dfd and was miserable, withdrawn and easy to get angry until she was reinstated (now I am the miserable one). Her sister commited suicide when faced with the choice of returning to live with her JW husband and his family, because she realised within days of getting married was a horrible mistake, or be df'd.
Why do governments allow such abusive practices by so called religions when they would not allow it in other walks of life. Suppose a school had a disciplinary measure that none of the children could speak or interact with one of the pupils who had commited a particular type of misbehaviour. I don't think it would matter whether it was a government or private school, the government would move very quickly to ban such a practice as soon as the parents started complaining. The problem here is that it is often the parents who are the prepetrators.

Will Rudd learn from the lesson of Brown?
by slimboyfat inisn't australian politics fascinating?
having toppled the woman who first toppled him, prime minister rudd now faces the choice of calling an election sooner or later.
it was a similar choice that faced gordon brown in the uk when he replaced tony blair in 2007. gordon brown was remarkably popular at the time, a brief popularity that came out of nowhere and that equally disappeared never to return.

Between Gillard, Rudd and Abbott you could not think of a worse choice of prime ministers - wo is Australian politics at the moment...even politics in the UK looks better

yeah yeah cos of some rain you get a default draw to retain the ashes...now if you had won the test in commanding fashion like in the second maybe some crowing would be in order but i think what this series has shown is just how important it is to win the toss in England!
